Red Beetle? can anyone help me identify and kill??

hi all

was at my friends allotment and found a rather strange beetle on her lily plants and some of the others nearby. It had a red red glossy wing casing with a black underneath and legs. it appeared to have been eating through the leaves (and was mating when we found them). i have a couple of pictures if any one can help, i'll post them on my msn myspace under photos, pests.

it does look very much like the beetles we saw, but without my glasses them pics arent too clear. will tell my friend that she has a lot of hard work ahead of her!!!
